Lift Modernisation

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.  Do I legally need to maintain my elevator or have periodic services?

  • Yes. Regulations imposed by the Health & Safety at Work Act and British Safety requirements mean that you are required to keep your elevator in safe working order. This means you must arrange the regular servicing and maintenance of your elevator.

Q.  Can Universal Elevators service & maintain my elevator?

  • Yes. Universal Elevators can service and maintain all makes and types of elevators. As a firm with full ISO Global Accreditations in Quality, Health & Safety and Environmental Management, you can be assured that you are in safe hands.

Q.  How often should I have my elevator serviced?

  • The frequency of service visits depends upon: the type of lift, the loads it carries, how often it's used and the number of floors in your building. Universal Elevators will advise you on the recommended number of service visits for your elevator. Servicing is a preventative maintenance measure – more service visits should result in a more reliable elevator and help reduce/forecast costs in the medium to long term.

Q.  What does a Universal Elevators service visit involve?

  • During a service visit, our engineers will check the safety features on the elevator, as well as cleaning and lubricating all components for optimum performance.

Q.  Can my elevator be used while an engineer is servicing, repairing or upgrading it?

  • Not usually. Service visits are normally conducted in office hours (Mon-Fri 0800-1700). The engineer will need to check many items within the elevator, the elevator shaft and motor room. The elevator will therefore be unavailable while the engineer is on site. Out of hours servicing is available upon request (may be subject to a charge).

Q.  Can Universal Elevators service, maintain, repair or install equipment other than my elevator?

  • Yes. Universal Elevators can service, maintain, repair and install all types of passenger and goods elevators, escalators, dumb waiters, stairlifts, platform lifts and hoists.

Q.  When should I consider modernising or upgrading my elevator?

  • You should consider modernising or upgrading your elevator when it's over 10 years old, if your building/unit usage has changed, or if you start getting complaints from unit users/other associated parties.
